Collaborative Learning Through Chat Discussions and Argument Diagrams in Secondary School

چکیده
This study clarifies whether secondary school students develop their argumentation skills through reading and collaboration. The students first constructed an individual argument diagram on genetically modified organisms, read three articles, and improved their diagrams. Next, they engaged in a chat debate, reflected on their debate by constructing a collaborative argument diagram on it, and finally finished their individual diagrams. The analyses compared the diagrams students finished after the debate and reflection with the diagrams they constructed before the debate. Collaboration not only encouraged students to elaborate their previous arguments but also helped them to recall and create ideas and arguments. (

Experiences of the Use of Argumentation Visualisation in Secondary Schools
Argument visualisation refers to graphical or other non-verbal means of making reasoning chains and conclusions explicit. Constructing argument diagrams is one way to visualise argumentation. The solving of ill-structured problems, commonly related to societal and educational questions, can be facilitated by a visual depiction of the variety of viewpoints relevant to the problem in hand, and th...
متن کاملCollaborative learning in Facebook: Can argument structure facilitate academic opinion change?
Social networking services (SNS), such as Facebook, are an increasingly important platform for computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). However, little is known about whether and how academic opinion change and argumentative knowledge construction (AKC) can be facilitated in SNS. Existing argumentation practice in informal SNS discussions typically lacks elaboration and argumentative q...
متن کاملDiagram-Based Support for Collaborative Learning in Mathematical Exercise
This paper focuses on the collaborative learning of mathematics in which learners effectively acquire knowledge of common exercises through discussion with other learners. During collaborative learning, learners sometimes cannot solve exercises successfully, because they cannot derive answers by themselves or they hesitate to propose answers through discussion. To cope with such situations, thi...
متن کاملBuilding Arguments Together or Alone? Using Learning Analytics to Study the Collaborative Construction of Argument Diagrams
Research has shown that the construction of visual representations may have a positive effect on cognitive skills, including argumentation. In this paper we present a study on learning argumentation through computer-supported argument diagramming. We specifically focus on whether students, when provided with an argument-diagramming tool, create better diagrams, are more motivated, and learn mor...
متن کاملLet’s argue over it: Are argumentation skills better learned collaboratively or individually?
In this paper we present a study of the use of computers for teaching argumentation through argument diagramming. We specifically focus on whether students, when provided with an argument-diagramming tool, create better diagrams, are more motivated, and learn more when working with other students or on their own. Related research has shown that the construction of visual representations, such a...
